English Language with Literacy:Training programme for Immigrants with Green Card Stamp 4 Status - January 2007English Language with Literacy training programme for Immigrants with Green Card Stamp 4 Status - January 2007 Students participating in one of the 2006 English language with literacy training programmes have since progressed and are currently participating in next step training - FETAC level 5 English language training, which commenced in January 2007. On completion of English language training modules, students will participate in a Jobs Club based in Balbriggan. This programme is funded through FAS and modules delivered will include Curriculum Vitae Preparation, Interview kills, Telephone skills Background: The need for English language with literacy training in the North Fingal area was first identified by Co-operation Fingal's Employment and Enterprise service. The level of English language and literacy skills amongst some Immigrants had been identified as a significant barrier to employment and further education opportunities. With this in mind, Co-operation Fingal in partnership with Integrate Ireland language Training (I.I.L.T) and the Department of Social and Family Affairs commenced two English language with literacy training programmes. Thirty two students commenced training in June 2006, with classes at "Beginner" and "Intermediate" levels. Training commenced in June 2006, each course was delivered over 20 hours a week, for a period of 32 weeks. Students English language and literacy levels were assessed by I.I.L.T. and subsequently students were placed on appropriate level training. Training was FETAC accredited. Eligible students participating in English language with literacy programmes received an a llowance of up to €30.00 per week towards childcare costs. This action was supported by the Department for Family and Social Affairs. Although initially an educational programme, new measures adopted included information on status, Department for Family and Social Affairs entitlements, further education and training opportuni ties, housing etc. As a result of these initiatives, Co-operation Fingal currently has a waiting list for future courses (subject to funding). A further 54 individuals have been assessed and are awaiting placement; another 53 individuals are awaiting assessment. This programme is currently available to students with Stamp 4 status only. Co-operation Fingal also receive some referrals through FAS and Co Dublin VEC. The programme is an example of successful collaboration and partnership with statutory agencies e.g. Department for Family and Social Affairs, IILT etc. It is hoped these programmes can be mainstreamed in the future.
